Report: T-Mobile USA to Introduce Open Platform for App Makers

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on August 11, 2008 - 8:00am.

Bellevue, Wash. - Wireless carrier T-Mobile USA (NYSE: DT) plans in the fall to launch a platform similar to Apple's App Store for the iPhone, which will allow almost any developer to create applications for all of the carrier's handset line, MocoNews reported, citing multiple unnamed sources.

The main differences are that applications will be available to the majority of T-Mobile's 31.5 million subscribers, compared with the 10 million customers who have purchased an iPhone, and the applications will cover all the phones the company offers.

T-Mobile would not comment on the plans for MocoNews, but issued a statement saying that more details would follow in coming weeks.
