Redwood City, Calif. - In what's become one of the most anticipated days of the year for U.S. gamers, Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS) on Tuesday released "Madden NFL 09," the 20th anniversary edition of a sports franchise that has sold more than 70 million units since its inception.

This year's version features 85 new features and enhancements, including one designed to continuously assess a player's skills and correspondingly adjust the difficulty of the game.

The game also introduces a new broadcast presentation package featuring Cris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond, as well as online leagues.

One thing that couldn't be updated in time was the game's cover, which features newly anointed New York Jets quarterback Brett Farve, wearing the uniform of his former team, the Green Bay Packers.

EA said that an updated cover shot and roster update are available on its website.

The game, developed by EA's Orlando-based Tiburon studio, is available for all major consoles, as well as the Nintendo DS and PSP handhelds.
