Sony Licenses Content, Lowers Prices For PSP MoviesAuthored by Jay Baage on August 15, 2008 - 11:12am.
Foster City CA. - Sony Computer Entertainment is lowering movie title prices for Playstation Portable handheld device in the Universal Media Disc (UMD) format, signing studio deals to license content and making digital copies playable on the handheld system, according to Video Business. Since the DVD market is maturing, the goal is to better establish the PlayStation Portable as a film-viewing device in competition with other video-playing devices such as iPods and iPhones.
In order to attract more studios to distribute their movies in UMD format, Sony Computer is promising to do the bulk of the work, including to license, manufacture, distribute, market and sell the studios’ films for them for the PSP. Sony is also cutting prices of UMD discs to between $9.99 to $14.99. The discs were originally priced at $25 when launched a few years ago. “We want to provide a legal offering from the studios, … and it’s an easier conversation to have with them now,” said John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America to Video Business. “There’s a lot of positive momentum with the PSP.” Related Links: http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6587713.html?nid=2705 http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP/About tags: Deals | Video | TV | Sony | CE | Movies | License Deals | Film | Sony PSP Universal Media Disc |
