Port Washington, N.Y. - U.S. consumer mobile phone handset sales fell 13% in the second quarter, to 28 million units, while total unit sales were estimated at $2.4 billion, a decline of 2% from the same period a year ago, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group.

"Quarterly unit-sales of handsets fell to their lowest level, since NPD begin tracking the category in 2005," said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD.

Motorola's market share fell 6% from the first quarter, to 21%, and was followed by Samsung (20%), LG (20%), Nokia (9%) and RIM Blackberry (7%).

Smartphone sales comprised 19% of all mobile phone sales during the second quarter -- a 9% increase from the same period a year ago, while 65% of all phones purchased were music-enabled, up from 45% last year.
