Apple Confirms iPhone Update Seeks to Improve 3G

Seattle - After weeks of relative silence on the matter, Apple (NASD: AAPL) for the first time confirmed the existence of issues with 3G reception on its new iPhone 3G, telling the Associated Press the new 2.0.2 software update for the device "improved communication with 3G networks." Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock would not tell AP whether any problem with iPhone 3G reception was related to the antenna, amplifier, radio frequency receiver, baseband or other component.

The company also did not specify what sort of improvements iPhone 3G users might expect after installing the update.

CNET, which has been soliciting iPhone 3G users' comments on the matter, said that after updating their phones some users did notice dramatically improved reception.

However, others said they are still having problems holding a 3G connection in places AT&T claims to provide excellent coverage.
