Seattle - Online retail giant Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) will acquire Shelfari, an online social network for avid readers, Shelfari said in a post on its blog.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 2006, Seattle-based Shelfari has already received financial backing from Amazon. The site allows users to create virtual bookshelves that showcase their favorite titles and share them with friends.

"We look forward to working with Amazon to continue with our mission of building great communities that celebrate books," wrote Shelfari co-founder Josh Hug.

"Now Shelfari and Amazon will work hand in hand to continue to grow our dynamic community and create innovative new tools around the books you love."

The acquisition comes some three weeks after Amazon's purchase of AbeBooks.com, an online retailer of rare and out-of-print book titles.
