Seattle - Online retail giant Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) has launched a new wiki-styled online music database, SoundUnwound, which allows any user to post and update informational, multimedia profiles on musical artists.
The site incorporates data from Amazon’s own online music store and IMDB unit, as well as the open-source Musicbrainz database and videos from YouTube.
Artist pages include detailed discographies, biographies, photos, videos, Flash-based timelines and recommendations on similar artists, as well as links to purchase tracks from Amazon MP3.
Any user will be able to post or edit data, but changes will not appear until approved by an Amazon staffer.
Unlike Wikipedia, another trove of information on musical artists, however, Amazon is not permitting the data posted by users on SoundUnwound to be freely used by other sites.
