El Segundo, Calif. - Satellite TV provider DirecTV (NYSE: DTV) announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its relationship with TiVo (NASD: TIVO), and will jointly develop and distribute a new HD DirecTV DVR with TiVo to its 17.1 million subscribers.

The two companies initially partnered in 2000 to release a DirecTV DVR with TiVo.

DirecTV later briefly opted to distribute its own DVR, before extending the companies' relationship again in 2006.

The new HD DVR is expected to launch in the second half of 2009.

"Together we brought the TiVo experience to millions of DirecTV customers and now we look forward to launching a next generation product that uses TiVo's latest features to truly showcase DirecTV's broad selection of high-definition programming -- all stitched together with the elegance of TiVo's renowned user experience," said TiVo president and CEO Tom Rogers.
