London - More than 70% of digital video recorder owners say they cannot live without them, according to a survey of 1,000 DVR owners in the U.S., U.K., Italy and Australia conducted by NDS (NASD: NNDS), a maker of smart cards and other technology for digital pay-TV services.

Owners ranked the DVR as the second-most essential household technology item, behind the mobile phone, and the third most-indispensable household item, after the washing machine and microwave oven.

The survey also found that over 60% of DVR owners with a partner felt that having a DVR had improved their relationship.

More than three-quarters of DVR owners with families in the U.S., Italy and Australia also felt that having a DVR has improved family relationships, "eliminating arguments over TV and allowing for the whole family to join the dinner table."
