Apple Unveils New iPods, iTunes 8, HD TV at iTunes Store

San Francisco - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Tuesday unveiled new iPod nano and iPod touch models, HD TV shows at its iTunes Store, and the release of iTunes 8 software, which includes new features like "Genius" music recommendations. Also noteworthy is the return of NBC (NYSE: GE) TV shows to the iTunes Store, following a year-long absence that NBC attributed to Apple's inflexibility on pricing and bundling of content.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the new oval-shaped iPod nano is the thinnest iPod ever; the device will be available in 8GB ($149) and 16GB ($199) models.

The company will also discontinue the largest-capacity iPod, the 160GB iPod classic, which will be replaced by a $249 120GB model.

The new iPod touch is also slimmed down, and will be available in 8GB ($199), 16GB ($299) and 32GB ($399) capacities.

All of the new iPods will feature "Genius" recommendations with the launch of iTunes 8, which generate automatic playlists based on preferences, and can optionally be integrated with the iTunes Store itself.

New at the iTunes Store -- which Jobs said now claims over 65 million accounts worldwide -- are HD TV shows, which will be priced a $2.99 per episode, compared with $1.99 for standard definition episodes.
