San Diego - SpinSpotter, a new online service that purports to be able to identify instances of bias and inaccuracy in any online news story, has announced the launch of its service, and an undisclosed sum of initial funding provided by Epic Ventures and angel investors.

San Diego-based SpinSpotter said it consulted distinguished writers and journalists, along with the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics to develop algorithms that can identify "a reporter is stating opinion as fact, an unattributed adjective, a paragraph lifted from a press release, or an expert source with a clear conflict of interest."

The company released a toolbar application, Spinoculars, that it says allows users to "easily see, share and edit any clear sign of bias anywhere on the Web."
