San Mateo, Calif. - VideoSurf, a new online video search service backed by Current Media co-founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, on Wednesday launched a beta version of its service at the TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco.

San Mateo, Calif.-based VideoSurf told the Los Angeles Times its technology can scan frame-by-frame and identify specific people within video, rather than just searching associated text tags or other metadata, like other video search tools.

The company added that it has already indexed videos across YouTube, Hulu and the sites of networks including Comedy Central and ESPN.
