NFL Union Countersues CBS Over Fantasy Sports Rights

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. - The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) has filed a countersuit against CBS (NYSE: CBS), which last week asked a federal judge to issue a ruling stating that its fantasy football games do not infringe on players' rights.

In its lawsuit, CBS Interactive said that the NFLPA has demanded licensing fees for its use of football statistics in online fantasy sports offerings, which it argues should be free because it is publicly available data.

A federal appeals court in June said that fantasy sports services to not have to pay to license statistics from the Major League Baseball Players Association, but the NFLPA in its suit called that ruling "unique and erroneous."

The NFLPA is seeking an injunction that will prohibit CBS from using statistics, as well as monetary compensation for past usage.
