Apple Recalls Defective iPhone 3G USB Power Adapters

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) announced on Friday that it is recalling the USB power adapters sold with its iPhone 3G, after reports that the adapter's metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating the risk of electric shock.

Apple said it received reports of detached prongs involving "a very small percentage" of the adapters sold, but is voluntarily exchanging the adapters for a new redesigned adapter free of charge for its customers in stores and online, beginning on Oct. 10.

Apple said the ultra-compact USB adapters were sold with iPhone 3G units in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico and several Latin American countries.

The company added that iPhone 3G USB adapters that feature a small green dot on the bottom are the redesigned model, and do not need to be replaced.
