Consumers Urged to Apply Now for Digital TV Coupons

Washington - U.S. consumers who still have analog TV sets that receive over-the-air signals are being urged by the government to apply for coupons that can be used toward the purchase of digital TV converter boxes by year's end, to "minimize the chances of losing TV reception" when analog signals are switched off in February.

The U.S. Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) said consumers should budget six weeks to apply for the coupons, buy a converter box and test it in their homes to ensure it works before they lose their analog signals.

"We urge consumers who need coupons not to wait until the last minute and to apply for your coupon(s), buy a converter box, and try the box with their television as soon as possible," said acting assistant secretary and acting NTIA administrator Meredith Baker.
