London - Nokia on Thursday announced that major label EMI and a number of independents have signed deals to add their tracks to its "Comes With Music" service, which provides buyers of new phones with a year's worth of unlimited song downloads.

The company said that U.K.-based retail partner Carphone Warehouse will begin selling the first handset to support the service -- the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic -- for 129.95 pounds ($229) on Oct. 16.

With EMI, Comes With Music now offers tracks from all four major labels.

Nokia said Thursday it has also signed new licensing deals with independent music distributors The Orchard, Beggars Group, IODA, Ministry of Sound, PIAS and Pinnacle.

The usual DRM

My blog rant: http://tinyurl.com/4m2tjt - Comes With Music is the usual DRM-infested subscription rubbish. This is something the labels have tried to sell to the consumer for the last ten years and failed; it's not clear why wishful thinking would make it sell now.
