Senator Asks Justice Dept. to Monitor Google-Yahoo Ad Tie-up

Washington - The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee has written a letter urging the Justice Department to continue to monitor the proposed advertising deal between Google and Yahoo, the Associated Press reports.

Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wisc.) did not make any other conclusions about the deal, other than to note that Justice should act if Google is "gaining a dominant market position" as a result of the tie-up.

Under the deal, Google -- the leader in search advertising -- will serve ads against the search results of Yahoo, the second-biggest search ad provider.

Yahoo has also seen the partnership with Google as a buffer to acquisition overtures from Microsoft.

The Justice Department is expected to make public its stance on the proposed deal next week.
