Wal-Mart Backtracks; Extends Support for DRM-Wrapped Songs

Los Angeles - Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) has apparently backtracked, and will continue to provide access to DRM-laden tracks consumers purchased at its digital music store before the company decided to begin selling DRM-free MP3s, Engadget reports.

Both Microsoft and Yahoo took flak for making similar moves to disable DRM servers -- meaning that customers would not be able to move their purchased songs onto new machines -- but backtracked after negative publicity.

In an email sent to Wal-Mart digital music store customers published by Engadget, the company cites "feedback from our customers" in its decision to at least temporarily continue to support the DRM servers.

The email adds that Wal-Mart customer service will "continue to assist with DRM issues," but once again recommends that customers back up purchased songs by burning them to CD, at their own cost.
