Nintendo Boosts Wii Sales Forecast; Profit Dips in Q2

Tokyo - Nintendo on Thursday announced that operating profits were up 36% in its second quarter, credited to strong sales of its Wii and DS devices, and raised its Wii sales forecast for the year by 4%, from 26.5 million to 27.5 million.

The company said that, in the first half of its fiscal year ended in September, it has sold 10.1 million Wii units and 13.73 DS units.

Nintendo's net profits for the quarter, however, were down 28%.

"If we look back, whether or not we have attractive games has had way more impact on our earnings than ups and downs of the economy," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told reporters, according to Reuters.

"I think it is safe to say strong game demand is intact despite all this talk about the financial crisis."
