Cambridge, Mass. - Harvard University Library will not take part in the new copyrighted works section of Google's massive book-scanning project, PaidContent reported, citing an article in the Harvard Crimson.

The university was among Google's early partners for the public domain works section of the project, but apparently is not satisfied with the $125 million financial settlement that Google reached last week with authors and publishers.

"The settlement provides no assurance that the prices charged for access will be reasonable, especially since the subscription services will have no real competitors [and] the scope of access to the digitized books is in various ways both limited and uncertain," wrote University Library director Robert C. Darnton, in a letter to library staff published by the Crimson.
