Los Angeles - Current TV, the multiplatform media company backed by former Vice President Al Gore, has laid off about 60 employees, PaidContent reported.

The company is apparently eliminating 60 positions in the U.S., while at the same time adding 30 new positions, many of which will be offered to those being laid off.

"These changes result from the development of a new, innovative programming strategy built around eight cross-platform channels, including news, comedy, music and technology, slated to premiere in the first quarter of 2009," a company spokesperson told Valleywag.

Following the layoffs, Current will employ 410 people. The layoffs come shortly after the company announced an expansion into the Canadian market with partner CBC.
