San Diego - A user of the social network Classmates.com has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging deceptive advertising, Wired.com reported.

Anthony Michaels says he paid $15 to upgrade to a premium membership after Classmates.com told him there were former classmates trying to contact him on the site; after the upgrade, however, Michaels found no former classmate had tried to contact him or view his profile.

"Of those www.classmates.com users who were characterized ... as members who viewed Plaintiff's profile, none were former classmates of Plaintiff or persons familiar with or known to Plaintiff for that matter," the complaint reads.

Founded in 1995, Classmates claims 40 million registered users, some portion of whom pay $15 for three months access to its messaging services.

Michaels' lawsuit claims there are hundreds of thousands of premium members who should be entitled to millions in refunds.

This class action suite

He is probably right. I joined because they advertised on one of my web sites. They have been trying to get me to upgrade ever since. I just don't have the time to deal with this so haven't taken them up on it. Nancy Kramer
