Washington - National Public Radio (NPR), the producer of programming for public radio stations, has named Vivian Schiller, the senior vice president and general manager of The New York Times' (NYSE: NYT) website, NYTimes.com, as its new president and CEO.

Schiller replaces Ken Stern, who reportedly was forced out in March following his 10-year career with the non-profit.

Chairman Dennis Haarsager will continue to serve as interim CEO until Schiller officially takes over on Jan. 5.

Schiller also previously spent four years as the senior vice president and general manager of the Discovery Times Channel, a joint venture of The New York Times and Discovery Communications.

"We are at an important phase in NPR's development, especially as the media world continues to manage through profound changes," said Carol Cartwright, the co-chair of NPR's search committee.

"Vivian understands the importance of radio as the foundational strength of NPR, and has the right skills and strengths to successfully navigate the company through a multiplatform world."
