Report: 80% of Online Consumers Making Web Purchases

New York - Nearly 80% of adult online consumers have made a purchase on the Internet over the past six months, according to a new study by Nielsen Online.

Travel was the top category, with 38% of consumers making at least one purchase, followed by credit card account management (36%) and home banking (35%). Clothing and books rounded out the top five.

"The sheer convenience of being able to comparison shop from your home or office has become all but irresistible," said Nachi Lolla, the research director of commerce at Nielsen Online.

"Possible early concerns about online security have been sufficiently addressed, and consistent on-time delivery and reasonable shipping costs have bolstered consumer confidence."
