Los Angeles - The U.S. Army plans to invest $50 million in video game development across a five-year span beginning in 2010, GamesIndustry.biz reported, citing an article on Stripes.com.

The funds will be distributed through the Army's Games for Training program.

Developers working on the project will be announced "in the next couple of weeks," Lt. Col. Gary Stephens, project manager for air and ground tactical trainers at Project Executive Office - Simulation Training and Instrumentation, told Stripes.com.

In addition to the $50 million earmarked for military use, the Army is also planning to invest in a "state-of-the-art commercial videogame system," Stephens added.
