New York - UPDATED. In the video interview embedded above from the Future of Television Forum East, Rick Cotton, General Counsel, NBC Universal (NYSE: GE), says that unauthorized video clips from Saturday Night Live's cupcake-eating white rappers of Lazy Sunday fame essentially launched YouTube (NASD: GOOG) into mainstream success. He also made the statement, which has been widely debated in the blogosphere, during a keynote interview at the event. He also discusses NBCU's efforts to protect its copyrights and attract online viewers to Hulu.com and NBC.com. Cotton also outlines what he would like to see from the Obama administration in terms of new regulation for protecting copyrights, and comments on the lessons learned from the music industry.
