San Francisco - Pownce, a microblogging and file-sharing service created by Digg founder Kevin Rose, announced on Monday that it has been acquired by Six Apart, developers of blogging tools including Vox, Movable Type and TypePad, for an undisclosed sum.

Pownce also announced that it will shut down its service for good on Dec. 15.

"We're bittersweet about shutting down the service but we believe we'll come back with something much better in 2009," the Pownce team wrote in a blog post.

Six Apart said that Pownce's employees will be joining the company, while Kevin Rose and Daniel Burka will become advisers.

Six Apart's Vox service is similar to Pownce's offering; both compete with Twitter in the microblogging space.
