Reston, Va. - "Cyber Monday" was a huge success for online retailers, according to new figures released by comScore. The Monday after Thanksgiving -- coined in 2005 as the unofficial start of the holiday online shopping season -- saw $846 million in online spending, up 15% from last year.

In addition, comScore said that the four-day period from Black Friday through Cyber Monday produced a 13% jump in online spending.

"Mark Twain might have said: `Rumors of the death of online holiday shopping have been greatly exaggerated,'" said Gian Fulgoni, the chairman of comScore.

"Consumers are clearly responding positively to retailers' aggressive online discounts."

All of the promotions, however, might be resulting in less foot traffic in retail stores.

According to a survey conducted by the firm, 39% of consumers said that there seemed to be fewer people shopping in brick-and-mortar stores than a year ago.
