New York - Amid a rash of layoffs at digital media firms precipitated by the economic downturn, Yahoo (NASD: YHOO) plans to begin laying off as many as 2,000 employees on Wednesday, All Things D reports. The company previously announced in October that it planned to cut at least 10% of its workforce, or about 1,400 to 1,500 employees, but several sources at Yahoo told All Things D the actual number will be higher.

"Things have changed since these layoffs were announced," a source close to the situation told All Things D. "But those additional cuts might not come Wednesday, but through attrition and a hiring freeze first."

Last month, Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang announced plans to step down; the company has not yet named a replacement.
