Washington - Following several months of discussions, two of the nation's largest technology trade associations, AeA (American Electronics Association) and the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), said on Tuesday that they have agreed to merge.

Both groups said that their boards have approved a deal to combine their respective memberships and programs, creating a new entity called the Technology Association of America.

The merger is expected to close by year's end.

"For all of its impact on everyday life, the technology industry has had insufficient clout in Washington and the state capitals -- until now," said Hank Steininger, chairman of the ITAA.

Earlier this year, the ITAA merged with the Government Electronics and Information Technology Association (GEIA), while AeA has been in talks with the Electronic Components Association (ECA).

The new organization, representing approximately 2,000 member companies, will advocate on technology issues in state capitals, as well as provide programs in major technology centers.
