New York - Tumblr, the provider of a publishing platform for mixed-media blogs and social networks, announced on Thursday that it has closed a $4.5 million second round of funding, led by Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital.

The company also announced that it has named John Maloney, a former executive at CNET Networks and UrbanBaby.com, as its new president.

Founded in 2007, New York-based Tumblr said that 15 million monthly unique users now visit the more than 500,000 sites published using Tumblr.

The company plans to use the new funds to launch a premium service that will represent its first revenue source, and further grow its staff.
