Report: Sony to Close Factories in Japan, Cut Major Divisions

Authored by Mark Hefflinger on January 5, 2009 - 10:06am.

London - Japan's Sony (NYSE: SNE) is set for a restructuring that will see the closure of some of its electronics factories in Japan, and "sacred cow-slaying" measures that company sources told U.K.'s The Times they believe will "abolish or fundamentally alter many of Sony's long-established business practices."

The moves are expected to be announced early next month, and come after Sony already announced plans to cut 8,000 jobs by 2010.

Some analysts have said that the restructuring is long overdue, with Credit Suisse analyst Koya Tabata telling The Times that the company must shift its business model to earnings gained from the content business, while research and development should focus on software -- as opposed to the company's various consumer electronics devices.

It is about time that Sony

It is about time that Sony moves forward. I find it very interesting that people still believe in “life time employment.” I mean does no one realize that the life time being referred to is the life time of the company and not of the employee. Job security in any country in the 21st century is myth and to believe different is just pure Machiavellian
