Report: New Broadband Sign-Ups to Drop 12% in 2009

Silver Spring, Md. - The number of broadband Internet sign-ups in the U.S. is expected to fall by 12% in 2009, according to a new forecast by market research firm Pike & Fischer.

The firm estimated that just 5.7 million households will become new high-speed customers, with consumers spending less on communications services as their job security becomes more tenuous and their discretionary income plummets.

Customer growth, however, could exceed forecasts if the incoming Obama administration succeeds in its plan to expand broadband availability as part of a major economic stimulus package.

The total number of broadband-connected homes is expected reach nearly 74.5 million by the end of the year, representing about 63% of all U.S. households.
