China's Crackdown on Web "Vulgarity" Shutters 91 Websites

Beijing - Following through with a campaign launched earlier this month to "clean up a vulgar current on the Internet," the Chinese government has shut down 91 websites, citing their display of pornography, vulgarity and other offensive content, Reuters reported, citing the state-run China.com.cn.

While search leaders Baidu and Google were among those sites initially singled out by the government as featuring vulgar content, they were not affected by the recent shutdowns, which occurred late last week.

However, the crackdown did not solely target sites with adult content. Bullog.cn, a portal that features a number of bloggers critical of the Chinese government, was among the 91 sites to be shuttered.
