Report: Layoffs Hit LGBT Media Firm PlanetOut

San Francisco - PlanetOut, a media firm focused on the LGBT community, has laid off at least a third of its staff, CNET News.com reported, citing a PlanetOut contractor and a former employee.

Media-related Twitter feed The Media is Dying went further, saying that PlanetOut has laid off 50% of its staff, including sales and editorial.

The struggling company last week announced plans to merge with Here Networks and Regent Entertainment Media, which themselves have purchased units of PlanetOut in recent years, including LGBT magazines Out and The Advocate.

The company itself had no comment on the layoff rumors for News.com.

PlanetOut's remaining holdings after the sale of its magazines and ill-fated cruise line business include the portals Gay.com and PlanetOut.com.
