New York - Just 10 months after acquiring U.K.-based Bebo for $850 million, AOL (NYSE: TWX) may now be on the verge of selling the online social network, according to TechCrunch.

Citing sources "intimately acquainted" with the company, the news site reported that AOL is quietly pitching Bebo for $200 million following its poorer-than-expected performance in the midst of the recession, as well as its overall change in editorial focus.

AOL has denied the report. "AOL is indeed quietly pondering a sale after watching Bebo perform much worse than it had hoped," TechCrunch reported.

"That, combined with an advertising market buffeted by the waves of the economic downturn, means Bebo's days at AOL could be numbered."
