Washington - Seven technology firms, including Google (NASD: GOOG), Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT), on Wednesday announced the formation of the White Space Database Group, which will facilitate the timely creation of a white spaces database to govern the use of vacant television broadband spectrum.

Some of the spectrum freed by the switch from analog to digital by television broadcasters has been allocated for the delivery of wireless broadband Internet service via "white space" devices.

The group, which also includes Comsearch, Dell (NASD: DELL), HP (NASD: HPQ) and NeuStar, will establish data formats and protocols that are open and non-proprietary, and will advocate that database administration be open and non-exclusive.
