Earthlink No Longer Interested in AOL's Dial-Up BusinessAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on February 6, 2009 - 9:39am.
Dulles, Va. - Once a prime contender to acquire
AOL's dial-up Internet access business, Earthlink revealed Thursday night that
it apparently is no longer interested.
Speaking during the company's fourth quarter conference call, CEO Rolla Huff said that his company's goal is now to "more aggressively consider strategic investment alternatives in businesses that we are currently in, beyond just narrowband access," PaidContent reported. He added that most of Earthlink's large shareholders have urged him to remain patient during the current economic downturn. "To be clear with you, I did not take their shareholder feedback as a view that they were encouraging me to go out and start buying stuff," he said. Last summer, Huff told The Wall Street Journal that he thought AOL was "worth aggressively pursuing."
