Notorious College Gossip Site JuicyCampus Shuts Down

Los Angeles - JuicyCampus, a site that let students anonymously post gossip about other students at their schools that had been wrangling university administrators, has shut itself down, citing the economic downturn, the Associated Press reported.

Launched on seven campuses in 2007, the site was attracting over 1 million unique visitors.

The site's notorious posts on topics like "the biggest slut on campus" had also prompted several schools to block access to the site, and a probe to determine whether it violated New Jersey's Consumer Fraud Act.

"While there are parts of JuicyCampus that none of us will miss -- the mean-spirited posts and personal attacks -- it has also been a place for the fun, lighthearted gossip of college life. I hope that is how it is remembered," wrote site founder Matt Ivester.

"While we support free speech, there was nothing positive coming out of this Web site. It only served to dampen spirits and ruin friendships," Erika Lowe, vice president of the student government at Western Illinois University, told AP.

The website JuicyCampus.com now redirects to "the official blog for CollegeACB.com," which aims to resurrect the concept on another website, called College Anonymous Confession Board.

"In the wake of Juicy Campus' closing, we find ourselves in a unique position to establish ourselves as the new standard in anonymous college posting," reads a note on the site.
