Warner Music Sues Web Music Service SongbeatAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on February 6, 2009 - 6:50am.
Hamburg, Germany - Songbeat, the provider of a desktop music
application that aggregates songs from streaming music sites, and allows users to
download some of them, has been sued by Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG) for copyright
infringement, TechCrunch reported.
Launched in January 2008, Songbeat provides streaming access to a large library of the Web's available music; users may also download 25 tracks for free, or upgrade to unlimited downloads for $29. The company maintains that its service is legal in its home country of Germany. Other labels that are part of Germany's BVMI trade group are expected to join the lawsuit against Songbeat. "The music industry's action shows, once again, that instead of looking for dialogue, they seek confrontation," Philip Eggersgluess, founder and CEO of Songbeat, told TechCrunch. "Our intention, though, is to be a partner, not an enemy. We are offering dialogue: open talks aimed at finding a solution together."
