YouTube Testing Out Free, Paid Video Downloads

San Bruno, Calif. - Google's (NASD: GOOG) YouTube on Thursday announced plans to begin adding the ability for users to offer for free, or sell downloadable versions of their videos.

The company has enabled partners to offer videos for free under Creative Commons licenses, which allow for re-use without a fee in some instances.

Partners offering free video downloads so far have included Stanford, Duke, UCLA, UC Berkeley and UCTV.

A "small number" of other YouTube partners are also testing the new paid downloads option, including "khanacademy," "householdhacker" and "pogobat."

Downloads will be sold through the Google Checkout platform, with Google taking a small cut of sales.

I predict householdhacker will be successful

If you ever have watched householdhacker's videos, you would have to agree that they are unique. They tell you how to make secret storage places for documents or other valuables, for example. One video I watched showed how to take a highlighter and use it to store money or documents in it. Another showed how to use a Raid spray can to provide secret storage. There is a good chance they can succeed with the paid download option. We'll see.
