- Twitter, the popular microblogging service, said on Friday that it has raised
$35 million in its third round of funding, co-led by Institutional Venture
Partners and Benchmark Capital. "We weren't
actively seeking more funding... Nevertheless, our strong growth attracted
interest and we decided to accept a unique opportunity to make Twitter even
stronger with a very attractive offer," the company said in a blog post.Started as a side project in March of 2006, San Francisco-based Twitter now has raised a total of $55 million. The company said that it will use a portion of the proceeds to "begin building revenue-generating products," as well as expand the size of its staff, currently at 29 employees.
