Dunstable, England - Consumers across the U.S., Western Europe and Japan are expected to purchase over 100 million Blu-ray Disc titles in 2009, according to a report from market research firm Futuresource Consulting.

"In the USA, BD has moved from early adopter phase through to early majority, with the format gaining real traction in the marketplace," said Futuresource senior market analyst Mai Hoang.

"Last year in the US alone, BD video retail sales increased by a whopping 320% to 24 million units; and we're going to see momentum continuing in 2009, with over 80 million disc sales forecast."

The firm sees Western Europe as still in the early adopter stage, with sales of 9 million units last year, and the U.K. representing 3.5 million of these.

"With more than 1100 BD titles to choose from, combined with growing retail support and increased promotional activity, the rise of Blu-ray will offset rapidly declining sales of standard DVD product," added Futuresource managing director Jim Bottoms.

"By 2012, around 50% of US and 35% of Western European video disc retail sale volumes will be Blu-ray."

blu ray growth

yet, the bd sales are a very small piece of overall video sales (dvd) which is on a decline. digital entertainment sales have for the first time, surpassed packaged goods. BD is a short-term last gasp for packaged movie entertainment!
