London
- Major record label EMI and its Capitol Records subsidiary have filed a copyright
infringement lawsuit against Seeqpod, the provider of a service that lets users
search for streaming songs online and create customized streaming playlists, and
Favtape, another similar service, VentureBeat reported. EMI also filed suit against
Seeqpod founder and CEO Kazian Franks, as well as company investors Raf
Podowski and Shekhar Lodha, and Favtape developer Ryan Sit. The
lawsuits seek billions of dollars in damages.EMI's lawsuit against Seeqpod follows Warner Music (NYSE: WMG), which sued the company for copyright infringement in January 2008. Seeqpod maintains that its service merely provides "playable search," adding a music software player to the song search results one could just as easily find through Google or Yahoo.
