Dulles, Va. - Maneesh Dhir plans to step down as the head of AOL's international unit following 10 years with the company to return to his "entrepreneurial roots," according to an internal memo obtained by AllThingsD.

Dhir joined Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) AOL in 1999 following its acquisition of Netscape, and more recently helped the company greatly expand its presence outside the U.S.

Over the past two years, he has been instrumental in helping AOL establish consumer operations in 34 new foreign countries, most notably his home base of India.

"It was his idea to open an AOL call center in Bangalore in 2002, which quickly became our largest. Two years later, he pushed for the creation of the Bangalore Development Center and the Bangalore Knowledge Center," wrote CEO Randy Falco in the memo.

Dhir is expected to remain with the company for two months during a transition period.
