New York - As the nation's recession leaves more and more people looking for new jobs, web traffic to career development sites continues to grow in step, according to new figures from Nielsen Online.

Traffic to the sites rose 20% in January, compared with the year before, with CareerBuilder (20.8 million unique visitors), Yahoo HotJobs (11.7 million) and Monster (9.5 million) leading the way.

"With the current unstable economy and rising unemployment rate, more people are heading online to search for jobs, and interestingly not just the unemployed," said Chuck Schilling, the research director for agency & media at Nielsen Online.

"Many people are trying to build up their resumes and get a sense of the job market before the next potential layoff."

The fastest growth in the category came from people age 65 and over, suggesting a trend toward later or partial retirement.
