New York - Cable TV provider Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) announced this week that it plans to begin charging for online access to its Newsday newspaper, which the company acquired in a $650 million deal in May 2008, Reuters reported.

"Our goal was and is to use our electronic network assets and subscriber relationships to transform the way news is distributed," Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge told reporters on a conference call.

"We plan to end the distribution of free Web content and make our news gathering capabilities a service for our customers."

"We are in the process of transforming Newsday's Web site into an enhanced, locally focused cable service that we believe will become an important benefit for Newsday and Cablevision customers. More particulars will be forthcoming over the next few months," Newsday publisher Timothy Knight said in a statement.

This disasterous news makes me laugh... Local web sites like http://longislandexchange.com will see a new influx of traffic and revenue from this decision and I can't welcome it more. I hope they start tomorrow.
