Sony Announces Reorganization; Names Stringer President

Tokyo - Sony (NYSE: SNE) on Friday announced a major reorganization of the company, forming two new business groups and naming current chairman and CEO Howard Stringer to the additional position of president of Sony. "This reorganization is designed to transform Sony into a more innovative, integrated and agile global company with its next generation of leadership firmly in place," said Sony chairman, president and CEO Howard Stringer.

"The changes we're announcing today will accelerate the transformation of the Company that began four years ago. They will now make it possible for all of Sony's parts to work together to assume a position of worldwide leadership and, together, achieve great things."

The new Networked Products and Services Group will include the company's PlayStation video game business; VAIO line of personal computers; new mobile products like Walkman MP3 players; and Sony Media Software and Services.

The new Consumer Products Group will include Sony's television, digital imaging, home audio and video businesses, in addition to its semiconductor and component business group.

Sony said that Kaz Hirai will become executive vice president of Sony and lead the Networked Products and Services Group as president, while Hiroshi Yoshioka will become executive deputy president of Sony and president of the new Consumer Products Group.

In addition to the two new units, two cross-company units will be created, the Common Software and Technology team -- tasked with providing coordinated software development services to the product groups -- and the Manufacturing/Logistics/Procurement team, which will ensure for the most efficient supply chain solutions throughout the two new business groups.

Previous Sony president Ryoji Chubachi will become vice chairman of the company.
