New York - Online gaming grew in popularity from 19% in 2008 to 25% this year among the 20,000 respondents recently polled by market research firm NPD Group.

While PC-based online gaming experienced a slight decline year-over-year, it remained the most widely-used platform for online gaming, used by 87% of respondents.

Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Xbox 360 was the leader for online gaming among consoles, with 50% saying they play online, while those playing online via Nintendo's Wii increased from 18% last year to 29% in 2009.

Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 2 fell dramatically, while its PlayStation 3 moved up from fifth place to third place.

The percent of online gamers ages 13-17 increased from 17% in 2008 to 22% now, while the percent of both 18-34 year olds and 35-54 year olds playing games online decreased slightly.

"These shifts indicate that online gaming may have become more appealing to 13 to 17 year olds compared to last year, a theme that is echoed by the growth in teens using a console system for online gaming, and a relatively proportional decline among adults, especially ages 25-34, across several systems," NPD said in the report.
