MIT Engineers Battery Technology That Could Charge in SecondsAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on March 11, 2009 - 9:10am.
Cambridge, Mass. - Researchers at MIT have developed a new
battery technology that could lead to smaller, lighter batteries that could
recharge in "seconds rather than hours," according to a report from
the university's news office.
The work, conducted under the leadership of MIT Professor Gerbrand Ceder, is based on a new surface structure for lithium ion batteries that allows the ions to move more quickly in the battery. In the report, Ceder said that that further tests showed that unlike other battery materials, the new material does not degrade as quickly as standard battery materials and could lead to smaller, lighter batteries, because less material is needed.
